So I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately,… that doesn’t really tell you much, I do a lot of thinking all the time, so let me explain.
A lot of my time recently has been me contemplating where I’m at in life right now and I want to be. Am I really happy with everything I currently have? I’m not 100% sure that’s true. I’m not going to get into the nitty-gritty of all this, but lets just say this,… my life outside of work has a lot of room to improve.
I own too much “stuff.” As my friends said when they came to visit this past weekend, I have a lot of gadgets. And its true,… I do have a lot of unnecessary gadgets. I used to have very little while in college and I’d say I was much happier then. When I step back and see the amount of “stuff” I have, its a little overwhelming. So over the past couple weeks and today I got rid of a bunch of “stuff.” I donated clothes, I threw out ridiculous things i was just hoarding for no good reason and my closet is starting to look a little more organized. Weird as it may be, I feel lighter myself. Though I still have more “stuff” I’d like to get rid of.
Now with all of this “stuff” gone, I’m left with just these “gadgets” as my friends put it. Here’s an idea of what they’re talking about: iphone, ipad, mac mini, wii, xbox360, samsung led 46″, macbook pro(from work). Now that’s just a quick version of the list. I have gotten all this stuff over time,.. but a decent amount of these gadgets and electronic thingy-ma-bobbies have come over the past two years since i’ve been out of college and have had a job. But this is just all a bunch of “stuff” still. And I don’t need any more “stuff.” What I need are experiences… take the money I would have spent on this stuff and travel. Experience other cultures, other parts of the world, especially while I’m still young. I read somewhere about this being the generation of “stuff” and I completely agree. It’s so trendy now to have the newest tech gear, and I’m, unfortunately, one of those people who gets caught up in the hype and just enjoys new technology. We need to realize that there is a lot more out there than just this “stuff” and go experience the wonders of the world instead of looking at them through google earth on the new ipad.
So with all of that said. I’m putting a halt on my spending. But really, i don’t know of anything else that i need/want to buy, i have a lot of crap + more that i honestly didn’t need in the first place. So now it’s just time to live. Enjoy the free/simple things in life. Like 70 degree weather (please come!), playing sports with friends, having a bbq, driving to new areas and stopping just because something looks interesting. Take some pictures, make some memories, and live.
That is phase 1. phase 2 for next post.
